About Brussels City Centre

Brussels is the capital of Belgium, with a population of 1 million people. Home to many European institutions, Brussels is a truly “melting pot” of cultures, but with its own character.

Founded in the 10th century as a fortress town, it became today the seat of the Flemish Community and of the French Community of Belgium. The City Centre of Brussels is surrounded by a ring road which was built on the second set of walls that the fortress town needed due to its rapid expansion; the walls were erected between 1356 and 1383 and traces are still visible today. Due to its shape, the City Centre is also named “the pentagon”. In 1695, Grand Place was destroyed after the bombardment of the French troops along with a third of the city’s buildings. The reconstruction of the City Centre lasted during subsequent years.
Brussels has numerous old buildings that impress through their beautiful architecture and give the city a historical air. In the City Centre there are more medieval constructions than modern buildings, some of them being 300 years old. Here, Flemish town houses are very notable. Some of the most visited sites around the area are Guildhalls and Manneken Pis, the latter representing a symbol of Brussels.

There are a few things that Brussels is famous for: the Belgiumn lace, the gaufres (Brussels waffles with caramelized sugar), chocolate and traditional beers of Brussels, gueuze and kriek. All can be found in the numerous shops in the City Centre. As such, Hotels in Brussels City Centre are pleased to welcome you and are wishing you a pleasant stay while we will be taking care of your accommodation.
